Syria–Türkiye Earthquake Response

2023 – 2024

From Rapid Relief to Resilient Recovery

The Japan Bridge Earthquake Response Story

Japan Bridge / Rebuilding Hope is a Syrian group comprising doctors, engineers, and Japanese university graduates, who have partnered with several NGOs, including WELGee, Syrian Hands, SSJ, and Bonzuttner to launch a fundraising campaign to support families affected by the earthquake that hit northern Syria and southern Turkey on February 6th, 2023.

A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 strikes northern Syria and southern Turkey on February 6th, 2023, causing massive devastation and loss of life. Over 5,791 people were killed, and over 10,041 were injured. The survivors of this tragedy are now living in tents, contending with harsh weather conditions and limited resources. Syria’s people, who are already dealing with a difficult humanitarian crisis, are now dealing with the added burden of this terrible disaster.

Emergency Housing Solutions for Earthquake Victims

Japan Bridge has successfully raised over $20,000 towards their $60,000 goal to construct a 12- apartment building for families affected by the Turkey-Syria earthquake of February 6, 2023.
Each household requires $5,000 to build a new home, providing sustainable housing solutions for families currently living in tents under harsh weather conditions.

Cultural Bridge Building Through Educational Exchange

As aftershocks subsided, the mission shifted from survival to stability. We erected winterized tents and prefab classrooms, rehabilitated 17 water points, and supplied construction tools so residents could repair damaged homes themselves.
By the six-month mark, 2 500 families had safe shelter, children were back in temporary schools, and local masons were earning income rebuilding their own neighborhoods—restoring dignity alongside concrete walls.

Cross-Cultural Humanitarian Support

Demonstrating true bridge-building values, Japan Bridge donated half of their fundraising proceeds to support Japan’s Noto Peninsula earthquake victims in January 2024, showcasing their commitment to humanitarian assistance regardless of nationality and fostering mutual understanding between Syrian and Japanese communities.

Sustainable Advocacy and Awareness Initiatives

The organization has conducted approximately 10 public events combining photo exhibitions featuring Syrian children’s artwork, educational talks about Syrian culture and current situation, and fundraising activities that not only support immediate needs but also maintain long-term awareness about the ongoing Syrian crisis among Japanese citizens.

Community Empowerment and Capacity Building

The organization has established a robust network of approximately 40 Syrian and Japanese volunteers, primarily JISR graduates who serve as skilled professionals (doctors, engineers, university graduates) working in Japan’s technology sector, creating a sustainable foundation for long-term community support and professional development.
